By Timothy Thompson

Many people still own and enjoy listening to vinyl records and will need a turntable to play them on. Compact discs and downloaded music is more common today and finding parts for record players is often quite difficult. If you are looking for a replacement turntable stylus there are various places to look for one of the correct specification.

A good quality needle is a very important part of you record player as it picks up the sound from the tiny grooves in the record and turns it into the sound. A worn needle will not give you a quality sound and it can also cause a lot of damage to your vinyl records. There are many types of needle and it is essential that you fit one that is compatible to your equipment.

The best place to find what you are searching for is an audio dealer in your neighborhood. Many of the outlets will have a stock of cartridges and single needles for currently made turntables and some older or obsolete models. If they are unable to find you a compatible stylus they will often order one from a manufacturer and you can collect it or have it mailed to you.

The net is also a useful place to find a stylus for your turntable and there are many internet based companies that can supply these. After checking their stock against your items serial number, they can usually find you a suitable match. Some of the sites will do a search from a detailed photo if you do not have any details.

If you are unable to locate a replacement from one of the retailers, you have the option of looking at a web based auction site. Many of the sites will have needles that you can bid on and they will often be sold at lower prices. If the needle or cartridge you need is costly or you have any doubts, it is useful to speak to the seller prior to bidding.

A useful place to locate hard to source items is in a junk store or charity shop. Many of theses stores will have turntables tucked away and they may have what you have been searching for. If you locate a suitable needle it can be worth buying the turntable as well to use for spares.

When you replace parts of a turntable it is advisable to try and use genuine factory made parts when possible. If the maker of your equipment is still in business, it can be worth contacting them to source your replacement needle or cartridge. If they can not supply you with one, they can often advise you of where you should continue your search by recommending one of their authorized retailers who they supply.

When you have located a needle, it is useful to buy a couple if you can for the future. If you have had some difficulty in finding your item, buying an extra one will save you a lot of time when you need to replace it again. When you are not fitting the new stylus immediately, it should be kept safe to avoid damaging it.
