Looking For Compatible Turntable Needles

By Richard Russell

Many people will still own and play vinyl records and will have a record deck to enable them to listen to their music. Nowadays, compact discs and digital audio is more common and finding spares for a record player is sometimes difficult. If you are searching for replacement turntable needles there are a few places to look and a little care is needed.

The needle on a record player is probably the most important component as it delivers the sound from the vinyl disc. If your stylus is worn, it will produce an inferior sound and will also cause severe damage to your records. Many varieties of needle have been produced over the years and it is important that you find one that will be suitable for your audio equipment.

The first place to find a replacement needle is in a specialist audio dealer which can be found in many large towns and cities. Some of these outlets will stock parts for models currently in production and some older turntables. If they do not have one in stock that matches yours, then they can order one in from a manufacturer for you.

The internet is also a good place to source a needle for your record deck and there are many web based companies that can supply these. After checking their stock against your serial number they can usually find you a match. Some of the sites can do a search from a picture of your needle if you do not have a serial number or other details. When ordering from a web based supplier, you may have to add shipping costs to your total bill.

If an internet retailer can not supply you with a needle, you can try an internet auction site. Many needles are listed for sale and you may find one that is compatible to yours for a reasonable price. If your needle is going to be expensive, it is advisable to contact the seller, before placing a bid on your item.

Another good pace to get hard to find items is at a junk shop or second hand store. Many of these outlets will have old record payers in their stock and you may find a match for your stylus. When you do find one, it is worth buying the whole player, in case you need any other spares for your deck in the future.

If the manufacturer of your turntable is still in business then it is a good idea to buy your replacement needles from them. If they do not make your particular model anymore they may still have some old needles in stock. They may also tell you where else you can look if they are unable to supply a suitable match.

When you have found a stylus that is suitable for your equipment, it can be worth buying a few, if they are available. All needles will eventually wear out and it is worth keeping some at home in case you need to replace one again. When you are not fitting them immediately, then your items should be kept in boxes, to prevent them from any damage.
