Curly Koa Wood Including Their Special Features

By Larry Walker

Wood comes in a range of sizes, shapes, and colors. Being one of the most widely used materials in the construction industry, it might be important. Each type has its own unique composition. There are those that are darker than others in color. There are also those that are hard than others. For this reason, the timber can be used for various purposes. There are other types of timbers that are rare, but highly valued. One such species is curly Koa wood. It has special features that make it the most popular in the world. Its name means warrior or bold in a certain culture and was highly viewed as being extremely sacred.

There are certain characteristics that attribute it to being famous, one of them being its decorative color and grain texture. The color portrayed by this type of timber is attributed to the type of soil it grew in, and its age.

Its ability to be able to resist insects and rotting is among the reasons why it fetches such high market value. It is this among many other special qualities that timber dealers or even carpenters prefer to use this lumber to make different artefacts for instance furniture.

Curly Koa is known for being swirly and burl. Only one percent of Koa trees produce it. This is why it may be rare and highly valued all over the globe. It may be highly stable and performs well. In addition, it becomes beautiful, especially when finished with varnish.

Nowadays, the wood is used to make a variety of commodities like guitars, furniture, bowl turning, and even certain wood carvings. This is in contrast to what they were used to make in the past. The ancient people used them to curve canoes and war crafts such as spears.

As earlier mentioned, this type of lumber fetches high prices as compared to other types. The reason being its demand is always on the rise while the supply remains constant and sometimes even almost diminishing. One of the factors contributing to this kind of state is that the tree is endemic to only a certain region in that it cannot be planted and thrive the same way in other regions. This, therefore, causes scarcity and low supply.

The other factor is that it may be uncommon. It can only be harvested from public land when it is either dead or decaying. It is seen as a sin to cut Koa that is still healthy and planted in a privately owned land. The practice is considered illegal and anyone found guilty of cutting the tress is at risk of facing serious legal penalties.

In addition, this tree possesses a rich historical background. Although its survival is not all that certain; it is a resource that can be enjoyed by future generations. This can only be made possible if the proper measures are put in place and take effect. Such measures would include to ensure that if one is cut another is planted to serve as a replacement. Conservation is the only way to go.
