What An AI Medical Scribe Does

By Eric Scott

Necessity is the mother of invention. This holds true as the healthcare industry strives to give the best service it can provide to the community. Recent innovations have paved the way to create an AI medical scribe that is used by physicians today.

Doing paperwork is a necessary hassle for every employee. Healthcare professionals have piles of documents they need to sort and manage. This is a required administrative work in compliance to the regulations under Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Physicians was observed and shadowed by innovators who want to know how they can improve the current system. That is the EHR or electronic health records which archives digitally the medical reports and lab tests of the patient in real time. Their aim is to help lessen the administrative work these physicians do after office hours so they can focus their energy on their patients.

As they observed, they notice how burned out the healthcare professionals are during office hours yet they still continue on to do necessary documentation. Their cognitive must have been overused and exhausted from the continuous sessions they do during the day. Hence, they created this device to lessen the burden of this work. They are able to go home earlier than normal and to have a much needed rest.

Using artificial intelligence, this is a software application system that the helps physicians in taking down information in regard to their findings of their patients. As the name suggests, it writes down the details of the medical consultation. This application aggregates the information so physicians have ease in their documentation.

Innovators also program it to recognize voice commands. Meaning, voice activation is being made use so physicians can no longer be bothered in pushing buttons. They can do more productive things with their hands. With it, they can pull up any lab results easily and with efficiency. It results to them being more focused with taking care of their patients.

There is a learning system programmed into it. It automatically updates its data bank for medical jargons it does not recognize along with its description. It lets the physician to continue the conversation he has with his patient. Unlike regular computer software, they do not need to manually go into its programming just to add a jargon.

There are two areas in which it benefits both the institution and the professional. One, since they do not need to spell out that particular jargon they throw out in the conversation, this saves them time from manually adding it on the data bank. Two, it lessens their costs since they would not have to update its system that much.

What makes this great and useful is it did not interrupt the workflow that they have going on. They are able to focus with what is important, that is the patient. They also no longer need to ask for any medical results from the diagnostics lab and leave their patient lying in wait. It increases their efficiency and productivity making their daily work fulfilling and successful.
