Steps In Becoming Certified Backflow Tester

By Harold Carter

To strengthen the protection of public health, the state of Michigan requires professionals to pass certain requirements. It is stated under Rule 1405 which is all about backflow preventers as well as qualification for testing and corrections. As mandated by the Department EGLE, they have to be certified backflow tester Michigan in compliance with ASSE Standard 5110.

Certifications are under the supervision of American Society of Safety Engineers made to ensure that companies and individuals know the systems for mechanical and plumbing areas. These systems promote improvements, safety, and performance for public awareness. Professionals are certified under this third party organization for areas such as rainwater harvest, backflow prevention, and infection control.

In order to qualify for this, individuals needed to be experienced in this industry for a minimum of five years. The reason lies on the training course they will take for forty hours. Exams, written and practical, need their knowledge and hands on skills proficiency. ASSE will hire qualified professionals as proctors for the exams.

Do note also that cross connection control tasks can only be done by those who are qualified in assembling backflow prevention. These tasks are separate systems that have been connected physically. For instance, one assembly that contains portable water while another has water that questions safety. This is why Michigan state government can be at rest for they know that ASSE only passes those who completed the course and exams.

The exams for initial and recertification takers have one difference. That is, the number of items in written exams. For initial takers, written exam has a hundred questions. Meanwhile, the recertification has only twenty five items. It is because initial takes has to be more comprehensive than recertification.

On the other hand, they are similar in the practical exams. In this section, they need to do demonstrations involving field testing. They must successfully assemble vacuum breakers that are can hold pressure and resistant to spills. Also, they must assemble double check valve and pressure principle.

They do certifications because they aim to bring professionals that are capable in protecting the water supply. They want to create a program that can take the challenge of having credentials on the standards. This enhances their skills in repairing, assembling, and surveying the backflow prevention. With this, their employability will increase as well raising their credibility to service companies.

Some schools have the approval of ASSE to have classes for their training course. For certification of 5110 standard, schools accepting them are currently numbered at fourteen. They can visit ASSE website in order to search for the closest school. Do note however that before classes start in two weeks, individuals have passed their application there. This ensures that there are enough source materials for them.

At the end, Michigan State and its water supply are the ones benefited from this. What is good about the industry is that standards are regulated strictly by governing bodies such as the government and the ASSE. Aside from them, professionals also gain income from being an independent consultant or an established company. In this age of digitization and information technology, it is easy for customers to find and contact them.
