Looking For Record Player Needles

By Scott Schmidt

A large number of people have collections of records and will need a turntable to play their music on. With modern technology, mp3 players and compact discs are the norm and so it can be tricky to find spare needles for record decks. When you need to buy compatible record player needles there are a few options available after a little homework has been done.

The turntable stylus is a crucial component as it is the only link between the record and the equipment. If your stylus has become badly damaged or worn it will require replacing to produce a good quality sound and to prevent damage to your records. There are many different types of stylus and it is imperative that you fit the correct one.

The first place where you will find replacement needles is in a specialist audio retailer which can be found in many neighborhoods. Some of the outlets will stock many parts for models currently in production and some out of date turntables. If they do not have a suitable one in stock that matches yours, they can usually order one in from a manufacturer.

The internet can also be a great place to source a needle for your deck and there are many web based retailers that supply these. After checking the stock against your needles serial number, they can find you a match. Some of the web sites can do a search from a photo of your stylus if you do not have the details. If you order from one of the web based suppliers, you may have to add some shipping costs to your bill.

If you are unable to find a compatible stylus from a retailer then you can try looking at an online auction site. Many of the sites will have long lists of needles for sale and they can often be purchased at lower prices. If the stylus you are looking for is hard to find or costly, it is a good idea to speak to the seller, before you bid on the item.

A very good place to hunt for hard to find items is in junk stores and local charity shops. Many of these shops will have old record players tucked away and they may have what you are looking for. If you happen to find a needle that is suitable it can be worth buying the complete turntable, to use for spare parts in the future.

When you are replacing parts of an audio system it is better to use a genuine factory made part where possible. If the manufacturer of your turntable is still trading, it is worth contacting them to buy your replacement needles. If they can not help, they will often advise you of where to continue your searches by recommending authorized dealers.

When you can find a stylus that you have been searching for it is worth buying a couple as they will wear out with regular use. When you have had difficulty finding a compatible needle, buying a few extra ones will save you a lot of time in the future. Always ensure that your new needles are stored in their box or are fitted to the your deck to prevent any damage.
