Useful Information Regarding Foam Cutting Wires

By Frances West

Foam has vast uses that include cushioning and insulation. It should however be noted that foams are normally produced in large sheets that cannot be put to use in such huge sizes. Therefore, they have to be cut into smaller proportions that can be utilized easily. To be able to reduce foam in to appropriate sizes, one has to use foam cutting wires. These wires are uniquely designed to be used in cutting foam down to myriad shapes and sizes.

There are several different kinds of foams in use today. Two of the most common types are the expanded polystyrene and extruded polystyrene foams. The abbreviations EPS and XPS are used to denote the two types respectively. EPS foams are composed of little beads, which have variable densities, strength, and weight. These differences lead to the classification of the foams into different sub-categories.

The EPS foams find many uses in insulation of electrical devices that are being shipped. The XPS foams on the other hand can be found in different strengths and are also smooth. The foams have many applications in padding packages and wall insulation in homes. Therefore, they are available commonly in building supply stores and in packaging supply outlets.

Foam chopping wires are usually fitted with a tool. The tool usually has a handle that the user holds as they cut through the foam. Most tools can be used to cut through a wide range of foams. However, before using a tool to cut through a certain kind of foam, it is important to check manufacturer instructions that accompany it.

There are some specifications that manufacturers give to indicate which tools can be used in cutting what foam varieties. The tool can be damaged if used on the wrong kind of foam. In some events, accidents like burns may occur. The instructions provided by manufacturers should also be followed when using a tool. It is important to do this so as to prevent safety hazards.

All types of foam cutting tools depend on heat to complete the cutting process. The cutting wires are normally heated using resistive heating technique. Wires with high electrical resistance are normally used in these tools. This is because the wires have to convert electrical energy into heat energy needed for cutting. When the wire heats, it can cut through any foam easily. These tools use mains electricity to function.

During the cutting process, there are fumes released. The composition of the fumes is mostly carbon dioxide and water vapor although there might be other gasses too. Due to the composition of these fumes, it is highly unlikely that the gasses might be toxic. Yet still, it is advisable to work in well ventilated environment since the accumulation of carbon dioxide can turn hazardous very fast.

Currently, these tools have different manufacturers in the market. This means that a variety of models exist which an individual can select from. It is important to have knowledge on the factors to consider before selecting a tool. One should talk to an experienced individual before purchasing so as to make a better choice.
