Advantage And Disadvantage Of Using Horizontal Drilling

By Janet Moore

As you tried to stroll around your city and see those nice architectural structural structures being built, you could somehow say that the world had really advanced. With new different technologies being introduced to humanities, life had become easier and the economy had really progressed. In the field of engineering, different techniques are applied to construct something. And they may use rock and dirt directional drilling.

Technology of drilling had begun long ago. Around 2000 BC, it was the Chinese who first started to use this to drill wells. They used cable tool procedure to generate salt water. As the demand of oil began to rise in the mid 19th century, the application of this technology had advanced especially now the world had entered the modern era. Many oil industries are now rising. As a result, this practice is needed.

Horizontal Directional Drilling or also called as HDD is a construction trenchless technique in installing pipes on underground. It has a minimal impact on the surface and much modernized compared to the traditional techniques before. Electricity as well as water industries can gain benefits on applying this. Nevertheless, it has its strengths and also weaknesses.

The good thing about using HDD on construction is it does not disrupt the land or the surface while it burrows holes so builders can install some pipes and cables. In that case, the work is much cleaner and faster, causing the builders to save some time and also the result is much quicker. Because of that, it became an ideal technique for installing gas, water and sewers.

When constructing roads, builders should ask some permits for road opening. Because of that, it would cause some heavy traffics and troublesome for the residents. With this method, engineers would not need some permits anymore because the project can still work underneath the road without causing traffic.

When the condition of weather is pretty bad, projects are usually halted and be resumed after many days. That would make the construction longer. HDD has advantage on this because it still can work when the weather condition is bad. If you do not like disruptions, this can be your perfect choice.

Nevertheless, HDD still has its own flaws. The common one is weight material sag or Barite sag. With that condition, it cause poor logging instruments, has some difficulties in sticking pipes or cementing and has no control on wells. The process of this may also be limited the land or soil contains some rocks or cobble. For some people, HDD is quite costly as it will require some special crews and equipment.

Despite its benefits that it can give to humanities and also the economy, it has its downside when it comes to environment. Wild animals and birds will be affected with the noise pollution that from machines. Aside from that, if pipelines and wells, even if it was built properly, would explode, the toxic chemicals that were released would bring pollution to the water and air. Not only that but it could also affect the health of animals and the humans.

Indeed HDD is quite beneficial. You cannot deny how it can help improve the economy. Nonetheless, humans should still be careful and aware of its effects to environment. There should be balance whenever they utilize that technique.
