By Janet Allen

For anything to be long lasting, they demand maintenance. In light of maintenance, awnings are no exception. When one has proper supplies and tools, it is easier to clean and extend the life of awning fabrics. Experts however, advise that preventing or averting issues through proper maintenance is much better. When in search of Awning and Canopy Manhattan should be given priority.

When a person does everything accordingly, the challenge of stains, dirt, and normal tear and wear should be easy to address and ensure awnings retain their new appearance. Besides, the appearance they will also be structurally sound with no risk of collapsing or the canvas being off by the wind. Homeowners should know that besides the normal wear and tear, awnings break down faster due to improper cleaning and lack of cleaning.

In terms of cleaning, one is most likely to encounter two types of stains during cleaning, that is, contact stain also called residual stain and organic stain. These two kinds of stains occur on nearly all types of fabric. One should not allow the stains to stay long enough so as to be embedded into the fabric. When they are cleaned as soon as they occur, possibility of succeeding at removing them is high.

Just as hinted by the name, residual or contact stains result from contact with a broad spectrum of substances. Such substances include dust smears, bird droppings, grease, foods, dirt and oils. Organic stains on the flip side arise due to biological sources, which include mold and mildew. It is possible to clean the fabric while it is still fitted on the frame of the awning.

Firstly, one should brush off as much loose debris/dirt like leaves and cobwebs as possible. Brushes can be replaced with brooms. This is accompanied by the use of cleaning solutions. Cleaning solutions are basically mixtures of mild natural soaps and lukewarm water. Since detergents are very harsh, they must not be used. Although the water should be lukewarm, it should not go beyond 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The second step is wetting the fabric. This can be done using a garden hose or a spray bottle. Next, a person saturates a scrub brush in the cleaning solution then uses it to scrub the fabric. The scrubbing should be done in a circular motion. The cleaning solution is to be applied only to the areas being cleaned. This is to avoid the soap from drying on other areas.

The final step is rinsing off the awning. This can be done using garden hoses. It is necessary to conduct rinsing to remove the mixture of soap and water. In place of garden hoses, buckets filled with water can be used. After thorough rinsing, one should leave the fabric to air dry. There is a difference in the cleaning process of various types of materials although certain steps remain the same.

To finalize, the framework of the structure should be checked regularly to ensure that it is firmly and properly attached to the building. All loose screws should be tightened. The awning should also be checked for any loose stitches or holes during the inspection and repairs done.
